Open House Day In Vernon

Saturday, June 8 is the 15th annual Connecticut Open House Day, sponsored by the CT Department of Culture and Tourism. This one-day statewide event is designed to showcase Connecticut’s diverse world of history, art, and tourism.

Discover the wonders in our own backyard with CT Open House Day in Vernon. This is a unique opportunity to visit local sites that have been on your ‘bucket list.’ You will find a variety of special events, tours and activities planned as hosting organizations welcome their neighbors.

There are five Vernon venues offering free open houses and special events. They are listed below with times and we hope you will take advantage of this day and discover more of ‘What Makes Vernon Special.’

The organizations taking part in this event are members of the Vernon Volunteers' Collaborative (VVC). If you would like advanced notice by email of this type of event please join our MeetUp Group. We post reminders on our Facebook Page and upcoming events are also listed on the VVC website under the 'Events' tab.

Arts Center East (10 to 5)

Arts Center East’s mission is to advance the arts for everyone through education, exhibits, events, and performances. They are celebrating Connecticut Open House Day with the Academic Artists Association's 69th Annual National Exhibition of Traditional Realism on display.

Special for Open House Day all Gift Shop purchases will be 10% off.

New England Civil War Museum (12 to 3)

The New England Civil War Museum is the only museum in Connecticut devoted to the fighting men of the War of the Rebellion.

The museum and its library work to convey the lessons of the American Civil War. They perpetuate the memory of the Civil War and of those who helped save the Union through the preservation and display of relics of that war.

Housed in an original Grand Army of the Republic hall the museum contains numerous one-of-a-kind artifacts from the Civil War, with an emphasis on Connecticut's contributions. The library and research center contain hundreds of books and periodicals for research and study.

The NECWM is located at 14 Park Place in Rockville. They are also open on Sunday, June 9.

Strong Family Farm (10 to 3)

The Strong Family Farm is an historic agricultural education center where children, individuals, families and community groups can experience an authentic family farm environment.

Strong Family Farm will be offering:

  • Our mascot Clucky T. Rooster with photo opportunities.
  • Visiting pygmy goats – Hootie and Annie and our own chickens to pet.
  • Tours of the 100-year-old barn (occuring every hour on the hour).
  • Free seed packets and garden advice by the Vernon Garden Club.
  • The Strong Family Farm Store will be open for business. Come and get a free preview of what's to come with the Grand Opening on June 19th. All CT Grown and produced items.
  • An opportunity for kids to plant a sunflower seed or take home.

Come visit and get to know the wonderful farm located at 274 West Street in Vernon.

Valley Falls Farm (10 to 2)

The picturesque Valley Falls Farm is a 7-acre property owned by the Friends of Valley Falls. The property includes an historic 1850’s farmhouse and 6 farm outbuildings. The Friends will offer free tours of the Farm between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Tour the historic Red Barn and Valley Falls Farm buildings. The iconic 'gentleman’s farm' buildings, now repaired from the lightning strike of 2018, take us back in time to 19th century Vernon. The Vernon Garden Club maintains the herb gardens, beautiful in the spring.

As a special treat, the beekeepers at the Farm will to give you a demo, and a sample of their wares.

The farm is located at 345 Valley Falls Road. Parking is available at the Valley Falls Park Parking lot, or limited parking at the Red Barn.

Vernon Historical Society (10-3)

The Vernon Historical Society’s goal is the preservation of our local history and making that history come to life for the community. It is located in the historic Vernon Grange building.

The Society will be open to welcome visitors to see our photography exhibit from the book "Vernon, Our Town."

Visitors can enter a drawing for two free tickets for the June 9 Tankerhoosen bus tour.

Those who sign up as a new member can select a special gift.

The Vernon Historical Society is located at 734 Hartford Turnpike in Vernon.
