Funding The Vernon Rail Trail's Tankerhoosen Bridge Repairs

Deteriorating boards.

There is only one location on Vernon's Rail Trail where it crosses the Tankerhoosen River. This crossing is on the Rockville Spur between Vernon Depot and the Rail Trail Mural. The bridge has one of the nicest views along the trail overlooking Tankerhoosen Lake to the West and a wetlands area to the East. It's heavily traveled by walkers and bikers every day with a constantly varied view as the seasons change.

But like all manmade bridges this one has wear and tear requiring maintenance.

Recently DON BELLINGHAM of the Vernon Greenways Volunteers was contacted by The Institute for Sustainable Energy about any projects the VGVs might have that fit with their Community Match Fund Program. The Tankerhoosen Bridge immediately came to his mind. Don called and they agreed to fund half the project, which is their standard.

Those of you who use the Rockville Extension of the Rail Trail are undoubtedly familiar with the Tankerhoosen Bridge. Repair of it has been on their project list for some time. The bridge has been inspected by an engineer and is structurally sound. What needs to be replaced are the boards that take all the wear and tear from the contact of the foot and bicycle traffic.

Labor will be supplied by a combination of Vernon Parks and Rec and the VGV volunteers. Parks and Rec received a cost estimate for supplies of $2,600. Per Institute rules, the remaining half ($1,300) can be funded by the town up to 35% ($455). The remainder must come from individual donations ($1,045) or as they refer to it 'Crowd Funding.'
